SAKAWA BOYSA survey conducted by Cyndi Research Groups, a local research group based in the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua, has revealed that about 60 per cent of Senior High School (SHS) graduates in the region are into internet fraud, popularly known in Ghana as Sakawa.
According to the survey, an average of 30 per cent of tertiary students also embark on fraud businesses after graduation, a situation that is worrying, considering the socio-economic impact of the practice.

Residents, especially, the youth, in the region have attributed the situation to unavailability of jobs after school, adding that the simplest way to make money and move yourself above the economic shackles of today is to go into Sakawa.

The inhabitants in the region made this known to The Chronicle in a random interview about the subject under discussion.

According to them, “We cannot embark on robbery to make money; we think the best way to make money today is Sakawa, and until something miraculous happens to bring us out of this situation, we will continue with it.”

Recounting some success chalked from the business, Frank Ofori, a young man who has been in the business for almost 20 years, reiterated that he has built a six-bedroom self-contained house among other properties, and is the breadwinner of the family.

Unlike other friends who use human blood as a means of ritual to make more money, Frank disclosed that he uses his brain to influence his innocent victims to send him money and anything he wants.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Eastern Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Yaw Nketia-Yeboah, averred that the practice is criminal, hence advised the youth to desist from it, since the police would not temper justice with mercy when they are caught.
