Indigenes of Danchira, a village along the Densu River in the Greater Accra Region, have applauded the Supreme Court for aiding in bringing about peace to the community.
The Danchire village, which is made up of four families, namely Sawerprano, Amanfo, Juaben and Kubeshishi, is a farming community that has lost its livelihood to estate developers.
The Stool Secretary of Danchire, Mark Tettey Oppong, addressing a press conference in Accra recently, indicated that the village, which once hosted one of the country’s biggest animal and crop farms, Ocloo Farms, had its lands invaded by trespassers leading to the loss of their plantations.
He said the estate developer, without their consent, ravaged the land with bull dozers, destroying their farm produce.
However, the matter was sent to the High Court, and the case was adjudicated in their favour, adding:
“We won. Djan Bi Amoo appealed to the Court of Appeal, which overturned the Judgment of Tanko J., but justice was not killed by that judgment, it was only dazed, for on 13th April 2016, the Supreme Court unanimously overturned the judgment of the Court of Appeal, and upheld the Judgment of Tanko Amadu J.”
“Tanko Amadu J’s judgment is thus the judgment of the Supreme Court. The matter was finally settled on the 28th of July 2016, when the Supreme Court, by a 7-0 decision, dismissed an application for review brought by FKA Company Limited and Djan Bi Amoo family,” he added.
He said the families’ engagement with the media was to let the whole world know that Danchira lands are owned by the four composite families – Sawerpramo, Amanfo, Juaben and Kubeshishi
He called on institutions and individuals hoping to establish business in the area to deal with the families only.
“Apart from the heads of these families acting in conjunction with the consent and concurrence of the principal elders, no one, we repeat, no one, has the authority to deal with Danchira lands. All who have purchased land from Djan Bi Amoo or FKA Company Limited have purchased nothing,” he stated.
