AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine has been awarded a certificate as the best corporate sponsor at this year’s Municipal Farmer’s Day celebration, organised at Bompieso in the Prestea Huni-Valley District of the Western Region.
The Chief Executive of the Prestea Huni-Valley District Assembly, Mr. Robert Wisdom Cudjoe, commended the mine for demonstrating a high level of commitment towards agricultural development and women empowerment in the district. Considering the contributions of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine to the agriculture sector, the Agricultural Director for Tarkwa Nsuaem, Mr. Joseph Nii Tettey Out, minced no words when he told the DCE that the support by Iduapriem Mine towards the Farmer’s Day celebration has been tremendous over the years.
With Iduaprime Mine supporting female farmers to ensure that the vocation becomes attractive, it will directly create employment, and there will be enough to feed on and sold at farm gates, as well as the entire agriculture value chain business.
The items, which were donated upon a request from the two Agric Directorates, included packets of roofing sheets, orthopedic mattresses, sewing machines, shovels, two 32-inch plasma colour televisions, wax prints and pairs of wellington boots.
The rest included four bags of fertilisers, machetes, spraying machines, and sound systems, amongst others.
The theme for this year’s celebration was “Agriculture: A business response to economic growth.”
The DCE admonished the women to venture into agriculture and approach it as a business to help better their lives.
Receiving the certificate on behalf of the mine, a Senior Community Development Officer, Mr. Enoch Osei, expressed appreciation for the certificate of recognition.
He pointed out that the initiative was instituted in 2011, as part of efforts of the mine to encourage more women to venture into agriculture in complementing the efforts of the government to promote the vocation.
In the Tarkwa-Nsuaem District, the celebration was organised at Agona.
Fifty year old Hajia Amidu, from Boamah, a community in Awhietieso near Tarkwa, took home the award of Best Female Farmer.
Having been in the farming business for over fourteen years, she indicated that her hard work had yielded results, and that she was humbled by the award.
Gleefully she said: “The award package will motivate me to work harder in producing food for my family and the nation at large.”
