From Isaac Akwetey-Okunor.

Front view of the EpicenterThe Fanteakwa District Assembly is gradually carving a niche for itself as a pacesetter in development with timely and ground breaking projects.

The district, which has 75 per cent of its residents economically active, therefore, making it a viable location for economic investment, became the first Assembly in the country to establish a radio station. Speaking at a durbar to announce the construction of the project, the District advanced for the construction of an animal market at Dedesewirako, where most of the cattle and other small ruminants sold in the Akate and Nketepa markets would be brought under one roof.

The construction of the new market, which is in two phases at Dedesewirako, a community sandwiched between Akate (in Upper Manya District) and Nketepa (in Kwahu South District), is likely to receive good patronage because of its location. According to him, the first phase of the market, which is supposed to be completed on or before 31st October, 2014, involves the construction of a good road network to the lakeside, three market sheds, and the gravelling of a big space for trading activities.

He continued that the second phase of the project, which is also supposed to start within the first week of December, will include office accommodation, a toilet facility and a warehouse for the market women. In a related development, the Assembly, in collaboration with The Hunger Project, Ghana, has commissioned a magnificent epicentre at Ehiamenkyene.

Members of about 10 communities in the area offered free labour for the construction of the project, which was jointly funded by The Hunger Project and Fanteakwa District Assembly. The project has a big hall for community meetings, a community bank, a grain bank, a nursery, and a clinic. This brings to three the number of epicentres constructed under similar arrangements in the Fanteakwa District. The other two epicentres are located in the Otuater and Dominase communities.
