The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts and Ministry of Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs, over the weekend organised a clean-up exercise around chiefs’ palaces in Accra.

The clean-up exercise was to climax the Homowo festival (Hoot at Hunger) celebrated by the Gas in the Greater Accra Region.

The exercise was also an initiative by the Assembly and the two ministries to fight filth and cholera. Palaces that benefited from the exercise are the Gbese  Mantse Palace, Akumange Mantse Palace, Osu Palace and  James Town Mantse Agbona.

The Gbese Mantse, Nii Bonte II, could not hide his joy and appreciation at the clean environment provided by the Assembly and the two ministries.

According to him, cleanliness was next to godliness and must start from home.  He noted that many city dwellers think cleaning was the sole responsibility of city authorities, saying, it is a cause all must pursue.

The Gbese Mantse stressed that several parts of the city get flooded during the rainy season, because the gutters are choked with solid waste, making it difficult for the free flow of water. He was extremely happy that the Assembly had now involved chiefs in pursuing the environmental cleaning agenda to stop cholera and other contagious diseases.

He appealed to the AMA to assign waste collection trucks to the area to enable the residents properly dispose of their refuse. The Acting President of the Ga Traditional Council, Nii Ayi Kai II, was also appreciative with the initiative, and called on residents to pay attention to personal hygiene practices.
