The French Embassy is collaborating with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), through Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, to fund the development of a new landfill site and other satellite markets in the metropolis.
Mr. Kojo Bonsu, Metropolitan Chief Executive, said a loan of GH¢4,393,000,000 has been approved for the projects, covering the re-development of a new landfill site as the first, and the re-development and construction of the Tafo, Atonsu Agogo and Asawase markets as the second component of the project, which will be constructed by Delovely Company Limited.
The Mayor indicated that the new landfill site will be completed within 12 months from the time the land would be released to the contractor for development.
He said the new site, which is good for 20 years, will complement the existing one, which also has two more years of operation.
Mayor Bonsu hoped such developmental initiative would benefit the people by improving hygiene, and sanitation.
Mr. John Debrah, the contractor, also gave the assurance that the project would be executed on schedule.
