2The members of the Asem Fun Club (AFC) at Asem in Kumasi have recommended periodic clean up exercises in communities to ensure clean environments at all times.

The Chairman of AFC, Mr. David Arthur, lauded the introduction of the National Sanitation Exercise by the government, and urged members of the public to embrace the exercise.

The AFC embarked on a cleanup exercise by weeding bushy areas, removed slabs from gutters and de-silted them, swept, and collected garbage from the roads at the weekend.

Mr. Arthur said it was not proper for communities to wait until they are prompted in cleaning of their environments by National Sanitation exercises, and urged all Ghanaians to take part in the exercise.

He bemoaned why people live in a community but choose to sit on fence when such an important activity is being undertaken, and called on the government to intensify the education of Ghanaians at keeping a clean environment at all times.

Mr. Arthur indicated that lack of logistics was a great worry to social clubs and organisation that might want to undertake voluntary clean up exercises.

“We always have to hire wheelbarrows anytime National Sanitation Day is observed.”

He appealed to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Zoomlion and other organisations to come to AFC’s aid, and provide it with logistics such as wheelbarrows, brooms, cutlasses, gloves, masks and others equipment to ensure their participation in keeping the environment clean.
