1Commercial drivers plying the Adeiso-Asamankese road have commended President John Dramani Mahama for the fulfillment of a promise made during the 2015 State of the Nation Address, which highlighted the construction of cocoa roads across the country.

The drivers, who could not hide their joy over the re-construction of the 24-kilometre stretch of road at a cost of GH¢31 million, said the President, in recent times, has made numerous promises which are yet to see the light of day, hence the tap on his shoulders for fulfilling his promise.

Barely two months ago, the Eastern Regional Minister, Mr. Antwi Boasiako, performed the sod-cutting ceremony to officially commence the reconstruction of the road, but many of the drivers and residents in the area were of the belief that the ceremony was one of the political publicity stunts.

The road has since seen a major facelift, and is about 40 percent complete, according to the Project Manager of General Construction and Development Limited, the company in charge of the project, Mr. Michael Azu.

The once dilapidated and un-motorable road can now be said to be one of the good roads in the region, hence making the transportation of agricultural produce from the remote communities in the catchment area to Accra and other parts of the country easy.

A taxi driver, a certain Mutakili Sadic, who spoke to the Eastern File, expressed his gratitude to the government and the contractor for the pace at which work is progressing, adding that the reconstruction of the road was the answer to every driver’s dream.

He explained that the reconstruction of the road would go a long way to arrest the frequent mechanical challenges drivers suffer in the day-to-day use of the road, as well as boosting their revenues.

“This is a much commended work by the government, and when completed, will boost economic productivity and revenue mobilisation in the Upper West Akyem District,” he added.

Mr. Michael Azu disclosed to the file that the bad nature of the road encouraged him to speed up the progress of work, and commended the chiefs and the District Chief Executive for the consistent support and motivation given to the company.
