2A private waste management company, Western Waste Limited, is undertaking a free fumigation exercise in all the districts of the region, with the objective to reduce the spread of contaminated diseases to the minimum.
The exercise, which is being sponsored by the company, would see all the district waste dump sites, public toilets and market centers disinfected to prevent the spread of the deadly cholera disease this rain season.

Beginning on a pilot project, four areas – Ahanta West, Sekondi-Takoradi, Bibiani and Sefwi-Wiawso – have been selected to be the first to benefit from the exercise. Consequently, staff of the Vector Control Unit of Western Waste have moved into action, fumigating all waste dump sites.

In the Ahanta West District for instance, Apowa was chosen as the beneficiary of the fumigation exercise. The community, including gutters and market centers, has been fumigated.

Western Waste is using a broad spectrum chemical which can handle all forms of insects of vector bond diseases.  The broad spectrum chemical has residual effects and can last for two to three weeks, due to its potency. The waste company would keep on fumigating the areas until the rain season is over.
