Several market sheds constructed by the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) at the Ho, Hohoe and Kpando lorry station, near the Afariwaa junction, have been taken over by ‘wee’ boys and weeds.
The fully completed sheds, which have been lying unoccupied for years now, are situated at a very advantageous area with enough space to contain heavy trucks which transport food items from the farming centers to the Ashaiman Central Market.
Because the sheds have been abandoned by the assembly, and there is no security to watch over it, some marijuana-smoking boys have temporarily occupied the structures.
All day, ruffians storm the base to trade in the illegal herb, with some preferring to smoke around the area.
Most of the doors to the containers have been broken, so a few of the wee dealers, who do not want to be seen in their activities, hide in them.
Due to the lack of security in the area, because of the number of the youth who visit the base at night, drivers desert the station as soon as dusk starts setting in.
Some traders who own sheds and shops at the Afariwaa Market told The Chronicle that they prefer trading at the Ashaiman Mandela Park to the Afariwaa Market.
According to them, a greater number of their customers are based in the Ashaiman township, therefore, if they relocate to Afariwaa, which is quiet a distance from the Mandela Park, they would lose their customers.
Meanwhile, the ASHMA, according to a source at the assembly, is in cordial talks with the Queenmother of the Mandela Market and all stakeholders to persuade the traders to relocate to the Afariwaa Market.
The assembly, the source said, would apply force to relocate the traders should they remain adamant.
