The Ghana National Coalition of NGOs for the Rights of the Child (GNCRC) has committed GH¢180,000 in scholarships and provision of vocational, technical training and school materials for 250 girls in the Ashanti Region under the Girls Power Project over the last three years.
The materials included school uniforms, bags, sandals and exercise books, Mr. Barima Akwasi Amankwaa, Acting National Co-ordinator of the GNCRC, disclosed at the seven-day camp meeting of 100 girls from Basic schools in Kumasi under the theme: Transforming Girls into Future leaders and Entrepreneurs”.
The Girls Power Project, themed: ”Equal Opportunities for girls and young women,” is a five-year project being funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Netherlands for 230 communities in Ghana.
The implementation period of the project ends this year.
Mr. Amankwaah indicated that about 10,000 girls from 30 communities in the Bosomtwe, Kwabre East, Kumasi Metropolis and Obuasi Municipality have benefitted from the project, from the training of 2,010 community Child Protection teams.
The Co-ordinator expressed appreciation to Plan International Ghana for financial support towards the camp meeting and activities under the Girls Power Project.
Mr. Raphael Bokumah, Head of Operations of Plan International Ghana, announced his outfit’s commitment to supporting the project to improve the lot of girls and young women.
Madam Josephine Konadu Kodua, President of the GNCRC, noted that the project has helped in the promotion of the rights and responsibilities of girls.
Dr. Mrs. Vivian Paintsil, Medical Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), said girls have the potential when given the right direction, and stressed the importance of the empowerment of girls in the fight against poverty to improve upon their living conditions.
