2Shirley Smile Foundation, a community-based charity organisation, is hoping the residents of Dixcove in the Ahanta West District of the region would put up a positive attitude towards tackling sanitation in the area.

This was after the foundation donated sanitation materials such as wheel barrows, rakes and spades to the residents to put a new environmental and sanitation attitude.  The materials donated by the foundation saw the residents, led by their chiefs, embark on a sanitation exercise de-silting and clearing gutters chocked with refuse and other materials.

The main gutter in the area, which, hitherto, was filled with refuse and filth, was cleared by the residents resulting in the free flow of waste water.  The donation of the materials, which coincided with the cleaning of the Dixcove community, which was attended by the Chief of the area, Nana Hima Dekyi IV, and Mr. Joseph Max-Prince Ainoo, a former Presiding Member of the Ahanta West Assembly (AWDA) amongst other dignitaries.

Over three hundred residents joined the exercise, which was themed, ‘Embracing the New Year with Smiles’.  Before the exercise, executives of the foundation met with the Paramount Chief of Lower and Upper Dixcove, Nana Kwesi Agyeman and Nana Hima Dekyi IV respectively, to apprise them of the exercise to rid the Dixcove community of filth. The two chiefs consequently gave their blessing for the exercise to kick-start.

Residents who took part in the clean up exercise freely spoke on the importance of cleanliness. Mr. Joseph Ainoo, who led the foundation to embark on the exercise, encouraged the residents to embark on regular clean up exercises, and not wait until the monthly National Sanitation Day exercise.

1He added that the foundation intended to motivate members or the youth clubs ready to embark on communal sanitation exercises. On his part, Obrempong Hima Dekyi IV thanked the Shirley Foundation for the donation.  He was of the firm belief that cleanliness was paramount in the life of every individual. This was the reason it is said that cleanliness is next to godliness.  Obrempong Dekyi, therefore, encouraged his subjects to clean their environments to avoid certain diseases.
