As part of efforts at promoting and enhancing qualitative delivery of teaching and learning in the Old Tafo/Pankrono Constituency in Kumasi, the member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency, Dr. Anthony Akoto Osei, has donated 300 dual-desks, computers and /laptops to all public schools and the Kumasi Wesley Girls’ SHS, from his 2015 share of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).
The desks and seven desk top computers cost GH¢50,000. A release from the MP’s office, signed by the Special Assistant, J.K. Owusu-Boakye (aka General Abito), indicated that the Metropolitan Education Office has received the desks for onward distribution to the various beneficiary schools and institutions.
Moses Donkor, who is the NPP Constituency Chairman of Old Tafo/Pankrono, noted that the presentation was a result of ‘needs assessment’ in the various public schools. Following increases in enrolment levels in both Basic/Junior and Senior High schools, infrastructural needs have become imperative, and the MP decided to utilise both his 2014/2015 share of the GETFund to provide dual desks, computers and laptops to the various schools.
Receiving the logistics, the Metro Education Director pledged that the schools will ensure the proper use and maintenance of the items to benefit the students, thereby promoting efficient delivery of teaching and learning. In a related development, the MP has been commended by the Metro Education Directorate for providing Supplementary Readers to all public JHS in the Tafo/Pankrono Constituency.
An amount of GH¢10,000 from the MPs share of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) was released to procure the books, which a local publishing company (Messrs Isaac Publishing Company) supplied.
A total of over 6,500 students have, since 2006, benefited from the MPs Shared Scholarship Scheme (MPSSS), which has supported ‘needy but brilliant” students pursuing various academic, professional and vocational education careers, with an allocated share of 80% from the MP’s share of the DACF.
In the 2014/15 Academic Year a support-funding of about GH¢85,000, representing payment of two quarters of the DACF, was utilised by the scholarship scheme for the constituents. Thus, in the 2015/16 Academic Year, about GH¢62,000 has so far been utilised by the scheme to support students.
Dr. Anthony Akoto Osei has, since last year, instituted a GH¢5,000 quarterly Development Fund for the Tafo Traditional Council (TTC), to enable the royal palace promote holistic development in the constituency.
The MP has adopted a pragmatic approach and an all-inclusive utilisation of the MP’s Development Fund to support various development needs of constituents, and ensure value-for-money of his share of the funds.
