The Ashanti Regional Police Command, in collaboration with the Tamale Regional Police Command, in the morning of April 10, 2016, arrested two members of a suspected car stealing syndicate, in connection with the stealing of an MTN branded Toyota Hilux pick-up, with registration number GN 8523-14.
The suspects, Antwi Duku, 30, and Abdulai Shaibu Gafarp, 26, both traders and residents of Behenase in Ashanti Region and Nyankpanduri in the Northern Region respectively, are in custody assisting in investigations.
ACP Peter Baaba, Ashanti Regional Crime Officer, told the media at a briefing that the vehicle was parked on the street in front of a house at TUC, Kumasi, by the driver who is a sales controller of the Sefwe Bekwai branch of MTN Ghana.
According to him, the driver arrived in Kumasi from Sefwi Bekwai on April 9, 2016 at about 7 p.m., and parked the car in front of his house, but woke up the following morning, at about 6:00a.m., and detected that the vehicle was nowhere to be found, upon which he lodged a complaint with the police.
ACP Baaba indicated that upon receipt of the report, an SOS message was sent out to all stations and police check points for the arrest of the occupants of the vehicle, in which an anti-theft tracking device was installed.
The Crime Officer revealed that the Northern Regional Police Command was immediately contacted, after the anti-theft tracking device revealed that the vehicle was in the Northern part of the country, leading to the arrest of the two suspects on board the vehicle.
Mr. Baaba disclosed that the two suspects were then brought to the Ashanti Regional Command for further investigations.
Meanwhile, the Abuakwa Police have also identified Antwi Duku in another car snatching case which is being investigated, while the suspects also confessed in their caution statement that they managed to remove the ignition housing of the vehicle and joined the wires to move it.
They also confessed that the number plates were removed so they could conceal the vehicle. In another development, the Ashanti Police Command has arrested one Apala Atinga in a swoop at Santasi roundabout. A search of the container in which the arrest took place revealed 477 wrappers and one compressed parcel of dried leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp.
According ACP Baaba, the police also retrieved three cylinders, a bag of rice, 14 television sets, speakers and quantity of footwear, which were later identified by some victims of break-ins as having been stolen from their stores.
He disclosed that the suspect, during investigation, mentioned one Castro and Azaglo as his accomplices, who are on the run.
