The Mother Smith International Primary School, located at Chirapatre in Kumasi, has won the second edition of the Zoomlion Kids Club Quiz Competition, instituted by the leading waste management company in Ghana.
The competition, themed “Catch Them Young”, has been instituted by Zoomlion as part of moves to create awareness of effective waste management practices amongst young children in the country. It forms part of the company’s initiative towards sensitising school children, and inculcating in them the essence of good sanitation practices in their communities.
About 15 schools selected from the Kumasi Metropolis participated in the Quiz Competition which saw pupils answering questions bordering on sanitation, waste management and its effects on human lives and the environment.
For their package, Mother Smith Primary School received an undisclosed sum of money, wheelbarrows, litter bins, shovels and hand gloves as well as a trophy whilst there were other attractive packages for both the first and second runners up.
The Deputy Regional Manager of Zoomlion, who is also the Coordinator for the Zoomlion Kids Club, Franklin Ofori Akuffo, said the competition was an academic activity geared towards instilling in the kids the need for proper sanitation in their houses and communities. He said the competition would be held annually and would be participated by all the 34 schools which form membership of the Zoomlion Kids Clubs.
The Metro Director of School Health Environmental Programme (SHEP), Mad. Augustina Attakorah, lauded the initiative of Zoomlion to get basic schools to compete in sanitation programmes. She therefore charged the company to sustain the efforts and endeavour to involve more basic schools in the competition.
