The Ashanti Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has served notice that it will not hesitate to unleash its men onto the field to deal with some elements within the security forces, as well as the opposition New Patriotic Party in the region.
The NDC says it has readied its men for action, and would not hesitate to react appropriately, if the alleged intimidations and harassments from the Police Service in the region, as well as the NPP, persist.
The ruling party alleges that the police in the region were being selective in their operations in the ongoing limited registration exercise, accusing the men in black of allegedly conniving with the opposition party to arrest its members.
The allegation from the NDC comes in the wake of the arrests of some of its members who were said to have caused disturbances in some registration centres in the region during the course of the exercise last week.
There were two separate incidents at Gyinyase in the Oforikrom Constituency, and Asokore Mampong Constituency, where some thugs, loyal to the ruling party, were said to have seized and destroyed registration materials belonging to the Electoral Commission.
In a statement issued and signed by the Deputy Regional Secretary of the NDC, Kwame Zu, the party accused the police of being selective in their operations, alleging that some elements within the force were operating as ‘agents’ for the opposition party.
They cited the arrest of their members, and the apparent neglect of the excesses of the opposition party, whose modus operandi, they contend, involved the use of macho men to intimidate agents of the NDC who try to challenge some potential registrants, as a demonstration of unprofessionalism and partiality on the part of the police.
However, the Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Tanko, has challenged the assertion of the NDC deputy scribe, daring him to produce evidence of police complicity.
ASP Tanko told David Akuetteh of Luv FM in Kumasi, during an interview, that the police command had carried out its duties professionally and without any bias.
“Currently, both the NPP and the NDC are accusing us of bias; it means we are doing something right; we have no interest as a security agency, except to protect lives and ensure law and order. The NDC deputy secretary is wrong in his assertion that the police are in connivance with the NPP. It is false and unfounded,” ASP Tanko pointed
