The Judicial committee of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council (AATC) has ordered for the immediate closure of the Asamankese chief palace with its corresponding handing over of all the stool properties to the Gyasehene of the place.
The AATC has further nullified the nomination, enstoolment, out dooring and installation of Osabarima Adu Darko III as the chief of Asamankese until the final determination of all issues in connection with who becomes the chief of the area.
The orders came on the heels of a court ruling, which saw the queen mother of the area, Obaapanin Akosua Birikoramaa, convicted for contempt of court by a Koforidua High Court.
The Court, which was presided by an Appeals court judge, Justice Henry A. Kwofie, who sat in as an additional High Court Judge passed the judgment, following what has been described as the illegal installation of a certain Kwaku Obeng as the chief of Asamankese.
The queen mother and four others, including Barima Kwame Ofori, Baffour Otibu Darko, Obutu Frimpong and Kwaku Obeng chief of Aworasa and Abusuapanin Kwasi Asare, under Order 50 of the High Court (Civil Procedure), were cited in the suit.
The applicants prayed the court to commit the respondents to prison for contempt. The court accordingly sentenced each of the two respondents – the queen mother and Barima Kwame Ofori – to a fine of Ghc3000 each or in default, face imprison sentence for a month. Cost of GHC2500 was also awarded against the queen mother and Barima Kwame Ofori.
