Following acute water shortage in Okonam, a farming community in the Suhum municipality of the Greater Accra Region, the residents have passionately appealed to government to, as a means of mitigating their plight, provide at least a borehole for them.
The 70-year-old community has been battling with animals which also use the small dam as a source of drinking water, a situation which has led to the outbreak of diseases in the area.
Unfortunately, residents cannot even boast of a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound and so when they fall sick, they travel all the way to Suhum, the capital of the municipality, to access medical care.
As though the challenges of Okonam were not enough, the quest of children to have quality education, unfortunately, hangs in the air due to lack of educational infrastructure.
Teaching and learning take place in a building that is at the verge of collapse, thereby compelling authorities to halt academic activities when the rains begin. The floors, which are also not cemented, pose health risks to the children.
In an interview with the Eastern file, an opinion leader of the community, Mr. Kofi Teinor disclosed that even though the Member of Parliament (MP), Mr. Fredrick Opare Ansah and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the area, Ms Margaret Ansei, were aware of the awful situations in which they found themselves, they had done almost nothing about them.
