The Ghana Health Service (GHS), in collaboration with One Million Campaign and Millennium Premise Ghana, has launched the Community Health Workers (CHWs) Demonstration sites of the Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) programme in the Ashanti Region.
The theme for the launch was: “CHPS; a strategy for achieving Universal Health Coverage – The role of CHWs and other stakeholders.”
Dr. Alexis Nang-beifubah, Ashanti Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, who launched the programme, said the gesture was appropriate to call all stakeholders to share views and experiences in the implementation of the programme to be commissioned in seven districts, to enable them access healthcare.
According to him, the role of stakeholders in the programme was very imperative, because the health worker lives and stays with them in the communities, and would help change the mindset of the people on healthcare delivery.
He expressed worry over inadequate vehicles and other logistics for the effective monitoring of the implementation of the programme in the districts.
He appealed to the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to be more committed to the programme, by giving special recognition to the workers in their various jurisdictions, to make the programme a success.
Mr. John Alexander Ackon, Ashanti Regional Minister, at the launch, commended the organisations for the laudable programme, noting that it would help in bringing healthcare to the doorsteps of the people, including those in the remote areas.
The Minister said it would also help to make quality healthcare available to the population, towards meeting the Millennium Development Goals and interventions of healthcare in the country.
Chief Nathaniel Ebo Nsarko, Country Director, Ghana One million CHW Campaign and Millennium Promise Ghana, on behalf of the organisations, donated logistics, including laptops, Tablets and bags, at the cost of US$200,000, to the regional directors, health information officers and CHOs, sub district heads, as well as 1,348 mobile phones to support the Community Health Workers.
