Hundreds of deprived children and orphans in Zongo communities had something to cheer about during this Ramadan Sala festivities, after being treated to meals and provided with clothes by a Kumasi-based radio station, Zuria FM.
The beneficiary children were provided with Sala clothes, assorted drinks, and food, under the auspices of the radio station, in collaboration with Zab Citizens Club, a Zongo-based non-governmental organisation. The programme, which is an annual activity, forms part of the station’s corporate social responsibility, aimed at giving back to society, especially, the Zongo communities, for their support and patronage.
About 700 children, aged between 3 and 15 years, were mobilised from adjourning Zongo communities to participate in the benevolent programme, which heralded this year’s Eid Fitr celebrations. Speaking to journalists after the presentation, the Chief Executive Officer of Zuria FM, Alhaji Haruna Abu, said the station owed it a duty to support the orphans and the needy, in order to bring smiles on their faces during special occasions like the Eid celebration.
He said poverty and child vulnerability were very rampant in the Zongo communities, stressing that it was worrying that many well-to do individuals in such communities often fail to appreciate this unfortunate situation and invest in them. Alhaji Abu, therefore, disclosed that his long term objective was to establish a school that will provide educational opportunities to these underprivileged children.
He, therefore, commended his wife, Hajia Suweiba, and Zab Citizens Club who contributed in diverse ways to ensure the success of the programme. The Promotions Manager of Zuria FM, Alhaji Abdul Ganiyu, said the activity was in line with Prophet Mohammed’s call for Muslims to support the needy, especially, the orphans in society.
