The Headmaster of Edinaman Senior High School in the Komenda Edina Eguafo-Abirem Municipality, Alhaji Issah Abbas, has appealed to the government and other philanthropists for help, as they battle with the problems of accommodation and transportation.
He revealed that the school, which started 37 years ago at the Elmina Castle with six students, now has a student population of over 2,000 and despite the increase in the population, the school has limited accommodation for teachers, though it operates the boarding system.
He stated that the only bus, which serves the school, is also in a deplorable condition, thereby hampering teaching and processes, especially in transporting the large number of teachers who are not living on campus.
Alhaji Abbas, who made the appeal at the 37th Annual Speech and Prize Giving Day ,stated that not only is the school being used as thoroughfare by people, others are also encroaching on the land due to the absence of a fence wall.
He revealed that with 141 teaching and non-teaching staff, the school admitted 799 students this year, which comprises 380 boys and 419 girls, adding that many other candidates were also turned down.
Alhaji Abbas admitted that even though there has been a general decline nationwide in the rate at which students pass the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) exams, he was quick to add that Edinaman, over the years, had seen students making good grades.
He also commended the staff, organisers and the operators of various scholarships schemes in the school for their diverse ways in improving quality education.
On his part, the Member of Parliament for KEEA, Dr. Stephen Nana Ato Arthur, who donated two sets of jerseys and GH¢1,000, pledged to institute a ‘Nana Ato Arthur Scholarship’ for the overall best mathematics students for both the 2nd and 3rd year students.
According to him, this initiative would motivate students to take a keen interest in Mathematics, which most students see as very difficult to get good grades in.
