From Issah Alhassan, Kumasi.
Educational development in the Manhyia Constituency in Kumasi has received massive boost, following the donation of modern electronic tablets and free exercise books to all the 14 public schools within the constituency by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
The presentation forms part of efforts by the MP to enhance teaching and learning in his constituency, and comes few weeks after he made similar gestures by presenting laptops and computers to the schools.
The electronic device comes in the form of a tablet which has been programmed with all the necessary educational materials, including examination questions and answers to help teaching and learning.
The devices are produced by a Ghanaian company, TAP2educate, and allow students at the basic and junior high schools the opportunity to download and access educational materials such as textbooks, past questions and other supplementary materials at their own convenience.
The tablets, as well as 360 exercise books, which were acquired through the MP’s share of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), were presented to representatives of all the 14 public schools by the MP during a ceremony held at Abbey’s Park, Ash Town, last week.
Addressing the beneficiary schools during the presentation ceremony, Dr. Opoku Prempeh said he found the device as a powerful learning tool when it was first introduced to him by executives of TAP2educate, and, therefore, decided to acquire them for the various schools in his constituency.
He said apart from the easy accessibility of educational information, the device additionally comes with examinable questions, which students can try their hands on in order to gain practical knowledge in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Dr. Opoku Prempeh, popularly known Dr. Napo, reiterated that the need for the provision of quality education must not be compromised, hence his quest to invest much funds into supporting teaching and learning in the constituency.
“My aim is to make sure no student is deprived of quality education, since it is their right. I believe that this initiative is a giant step that will complement this effort at improving education through the use of technology,” he noted.
A representative of the Metropolitan Director of Education, Mrs. Gertrude Mensah, highlighted the contribution of the MP to education, both within his constituency and Kumasi as a whole.
She said as far as she was concerned, “Dr. Napo has fulfilled every single promise he made to the Metro Education Office,” and, therefore, pleaded with other colleagues to do same, in order to improve education in the Kumasi metropolis.
The Sales and Marketing Officer of TAP2educate, Precious Bonsu, expressed the vision of the company to provide every child in Ghana the best of technological education, and called on all stakeholders to embrace modern technology that will make teaching and learning convenient to students in the country.
