2The leading communication network in the country, MTN Ghana, in collaboration with the Regional Non-Formal Education Secretariat, has organised a day’s basic functional literacy for head porters in the New Juaben Municipality.
The day’s programme, which forms part of the 21 Days Yello Care, a day set aside by management of the company in June to embark on community service and interact with customers, was heavily attended by the porters. The head porters, made up of both males and females, were taken through basic pronunciation skills, reading and writing.

Speaking with the File after the programme, Mr. Kennedy Ofosuhene, officer in charge of Southern Ghana, said the one day school was an attempt to improve the literacy level of these less privileged persons. According to him, his outfit would foot the bill of any person or group of the porters who want to continue the literacy programme to the highest level, as well as the Non-Formal Education Secretariat.

He continued that the programme was not only to teach these individuals how to read and write, but to inculcate and create consciousness in them on the need to take their children to school, as well as demonstrate a sense of responsibility. The Regional Logistics Officer of the Regional Non-Formal Education Secretariat, Mr. Christian Agyei, profoundly thanked management of the leading communication network in the country for that wonderful initiative.

According to him, a nation with high literacy rate is a dead nation, hence, the effort of MTN to imbibe the spirit of reading and writing in the head porter was more than important, and urged the company to sustain it.

The Regional Logistics Officer averred that the ability to read and write would not only help the head porters in their day-to-day activities such as taking records, but would improve the payment of tax for national development. He, therefore, called on other network companies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to join the head porters basic functional literacy programme for the development of the country.
