The Baobab Children Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, has presented 60 bicycles to 60 basic school girls in the Kissi Circuit in the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem Municipality of the Central Region.
The presentation was done by Madam Edith de Vos, Managing Director and Founder of the foundation, during a parade to celebrate of Ghana’s 59th Independence anniversary at Kissi. The beneficiary students were drawn from 13 basic schools; namely, Kwahinkrom, Kissi, Besease, Kyease, Dompoase-Kokwaado, Anweem Kissi and Anweem Kumasi M/A basic schools.
The rest are; Kissi English and Arabic, Oxford Preparatory, Royal, Ebenezer Methodist, Better Future Academy, and Samcud Educational Complex. In an exclusive interview with The Chronicle, Madam Edith explained that her organisation noticed that many of the school pupils walk long distances to reach their various schools, which, she said, caused lateness and absenteeism among pupils.
She hinted that her organisation had the plight of the children within its catchment areas at heart, hence her decision to support them. “The girl child’s education must be taken seriously at all times. It’s a pity the way they always drop out of schools. We are doing this to encourage others to have an interest in education,” she stated.
Some of the beneficiaries who spoke to The Chronicle showed their appreciation to Baobab and promised to learn hard to enable them pass their impending Basic Entrance Certificate Examination (BECE). The Baobab School for Trades and Traditional Arts is a non-formal vocational inclusive school that trains illiterate youth, early school leavers, and physically challenged persons from poor backgrounds. The school has a workshop where the students practice what they are taught.
