…For Infrastructural Development
From Ernest Best Anane
Rural Development College (Department of Community Development) at Kwaso in the Ejisu/Juaben Municipality has marked its 7th graduation (Sandwich Session) with a call on the government and stakeholders to come to the aid of the college to put up new hostels and lecture halls to meet the present demands.
The Principal of the College, Mr. Solomon Mensah, appealed to development-oriented organisations, institutions, non-governmental organisations, philanthropists and individuals to come to the aid of the college.
He said the college would have to stock its library with books and put up new hostels and lecture halls to meet current demands.
According to him, the college has outgrown its current boundaries, coupled with the dramatic increase in the student population, hence the need to expand and fully utilise the remaining undeveloped land.
The Principal hinted the readiness of the college to go into partnership with prospective developers to put up hostels for students, most of who rent rooms in the locality.
Speaking on the theme: “The Role of Community Development Institutions in Skills Development and Job Creation for the Youth in Ghana,” Principal Mensah disclosed that in spite of the financial constraints, management of the college, the National Directorate and the Ministry of Local Government have started the accreditation process with the National Accreditation Board.
He revealed that the infrastructure presently in use was inherited from the then National Adult Education Centre in 1987, which has seen very little renovation ever since, even though the student population keeps increasing, thus over-stretching the existing infrastructure.
The Principal, therefore, appealed to stakeholders to save the infrastructure from total collapse, to enable the institution groom interested persons to assist Ghana’s decentralisation process.
He commended the chiefs and elders of Kwaso for being very supportive, and expressed the hope that the college would be upgraded with the needed expansion.
Madam Sulemana Alijata, Member of Parliament for Sesala East, who is an old student of the college, donated 20 desktop computers and accessories to the her alma mater.
She also challenged the students not to allow financial constraints to be an obstacle in achieving their goals in life, but rather work for the development of their communities.
