Mr. Francis Anokye and Mr. Francis Bamfo, chairman and Director of Education, SupervisionThe Franchard Company Limited in Kumasi has instituted a reading and quiz competition in the Atwima-Nwabiagya District to inculcate the habit of reading in pupils.

The objective of the organisers is to roll out the programme throughout the country to encourage children to read and speak good English, while sensitising teachers on their role to achieving this objective.

The participating schools included Bright Future Link Academy from Tabre, Bright Future International School at Abuakwa, Monic Memorial School at Abuakwa, and Jesus International School also at Abuakwa.

Launching the programme, Mr. Francis Anokye, Chairman of the organisers, noted that Ghana’s educational standard had fallen because pupils do not take reading and the speaking of English seriously.

According to him, all efforts at improving the education system through the various reforms have not yielded the desired results, hence the need for teachers to encourage children to read wide.

The District Director of Education, Supervision, for Atwima-Nwabiagya, Mr. Francis

Bampoe, noted that a recent assessment shows that pupils in basic schools cannot read, spell and write, and it is in this direction that he commended the organisers for coming out with the bold initiative to move education forward.

Bright Future International School emerged winner of the competition, while Jesus International came 2nd, with Bright Future Link Academy coming 3rd.

Monic Memorial School trailed 4th.
